Citi supports UNICEF to provide laboratory equipment for hospitals in Ukraine

Kyiv, 2 July 2020 – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) purchased laboratory equipment for infectious diseases hospitals in Ukraine with financial support from the Citi Foundation. The assistance, worth US$40,000 is intended for the COVID-19 response in Ukraine.

The device, which analyses gas and electrolytes in blood, is used to measure critically important indicators of oxygen metabolism in the human body, as well as other indicators of gas exchange in the lungs, organs and tissues. It helps doctors to diagnose life-threatening conditions in patients with COVID-19 who are suffering lung damage and respiratory failure, and also enables the right approach to be chosen for treatment and oxygen support.

The devices are supplied with reagents sufficient for six months of laboratory work. The medical staff will also receive the required training.

Alexander McWhorter, Head of Citi Ukraine, said: “During the pandemic, Citi was looking for the ways to help those most in need in many countries. I’m glad that Citi partnered with UNICEF and was able to provide assistance to hospitals in Ukraine and help doctors in their work.”

“The pandemic has reminded us that the world is one, and that by working as one, we can make a difference,” said Lotta Sylwander, UNICEF Representative in Ukraine. “That’s why UNICEF is working with partners to fight COVID and help communities build back better. UNICEF appreciates the Citi Foundation’s contribution and its tailored life-saving support to the most vulnerable in Ukraine.”
