Citi Ukraine donated to the charitable foundation “Peli can live” to help save unique plants in the Mykola Hryshko National botanic garden in Kyiv and to create the audio guide "Trees for Birds"
Citi Ukraine joined the “Water for Botanic Garden” project, a “Peli can live” charitable foundation initiative, to save unique collections of plants in the Rubtsov Arboretum of the Mykola Hryshko National Botanic Garden. As a result of the financial support from the bank, one slot of the irrigation system supplying water to the pine collection will be installed and launched this year.
In the end of 2019, “Peli can live” charitable foundation launched the project for new system installation and revitalization of the Botanic Garden, as the old irrigation system, built during the founding of the Botanic Garden, failed in the early ‘90s. The construction of the new irrigation system will provide water and prolong the lives of trees by 200-300 years and will allow extending collection by planting of the new trees.
Along with the charitable contribution, Citi Ukraine supported the creation of the “Trees for birds” audio guide that will promote importance of trees in nature and make the journey around Botanic garden more exciting. The audio guide will be available to all visitors of the Garden and tell them about local trees and bushes playing a significant role in the life of birds.
In spring, Citi employees are also going to participate in the volunteering activity and plant trees in the Botanic Garden.
“Collaboration with such partners as Citi Ukraine is an inspiring example of modern business awareness about the role of nature in human life. The Mykola Hryshko Botanic Garden in Kyiv is a green heart of the capital, a place where people find peace and rest. In addition, the Garden is an important scientific institution, a center for phytodiversity conservation, and a genetic bank for plants from all over the world. Our goal is to preserve it for future generations, but to achieve it, we must act now. Without proper irrigation the botanic garden cannot exist and develop. We are glad that our partners support us in this endeavor”, - says Yana Bobrova, Executive director of the Peli can live Charity Foundation.
“We are glad to support this great green project to help save unique plants in the Mykola Hryshko National botanic garden in Kyiv and to create the audio guide "Trees for Birds". Through our core business activity as well as through philanthropy we implement Citi’s mission of enabling growth and progress, and environmental challenges are those that we all together need to address”, - says Alexander McWhorter, Head of Citi Ukraine.

Information reference:
Charity foundation “Peli can live” was created in 2017 to implement the nature protection projects. The mission of the foundation: “Empowering force of nature for the harmonic development”. Thus, the foundation builds pelican nesting islands and insect hotels, helps preserve forests and natural ecosystems, restores the forest belts.
The Water for the Botanical Garden project aims to save the unique collections of Rubtsov Arboretum plants, which have been suffering from water shortages for more than 30 years due to the irrigation system failure. The combination of lack of watering, climate change, and the peculiarity of the location with low groundwater levels have already led to the loss of some rare trees. The project envisages the construction of a new irrigation system, which will cover 30 hectares of the Rubtsov Arboretum (occupies ¼ territory of Botanic garden). Currently, 3 of the 64 required units have been built.
